Food education and the fight against food waste

We fight food waste by combining prevention, surplus recovery and sustainability education. We involve schools, families and communities to reduce waste, redistribute food that is still fit for consumption and promote more conscious behaviour, also with the help of digital tools that help measure waste and improve meal management.

The Numbers

Our impact in figures

0

waste-saving bags distributed in school canteens across 11 provinces in Italy.

0

food boxes distributed through the Un Bel Gesto project, corresponding to around 910 kg of recovered food benefiting more than 40 households.

0

Measuring waste and promoting conscious behaviour

With the Sprecometro app in schools, developed in partnership with Last Minute Market, we provide a digital tool that lets teachers record the class’s food waste and students reflect on their eating habits. The app reports the environmental impact of the wasted food not only in economic terms but also in terms of the resources needed to produce it (CO2, water and land). In this way waste becomes visible and measurable, raising awareness of the value of food and the importance of not wasting it.

Recovering and redistributing surpluses

We work with Banco Alimentare, Last Minute Market and other third-sector organisations to recover highly perishable surplus food from canteens, central kitchens, outlets and our distribution centre, redistributing it free of charge to people in vulnerable situations. In this way we reduce waste and make good use of food that is still fit for consumption.
The Un Bel Gesto project, in the Bologna-area municipalities served by Matilde Ristorazione, enables the recovery of surplus meals and, with the support of a digital platform and municipal social services, makes them available to beneficiary households.

Food education and food waste prevention

In school canteens, waste-saving bags let students take home unconsumed bread, fruit and packaged snacks, reducing post-consumer waste and bringing sustainability education into the home as well.

The next frontiers

Our goals: Measuring to improve

Today our measurements are based on estimates, because we often operate in facilities we do not own. We cannot make promises we cannot measure. Here are our concrete commitments for the coming years:

  • Map actual consumption: Implement a new data collection system that records water consumption alongside invoices, covering around 300 delivery points

  • Increase certified sites: Move from the current 6 sites with Ecolabel cleaning to 14 certified sites by 2028

  • Raise awareness in the team: Launch annual training for the entire workforce to promote good practices in water use
